Rick Scott & Jon Ossoff Launch Bipartisan Inquiry into VA Community Care Wait Times

Below is a statement from the office of U.S. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla):

As part of their effort to reduce wait times at VA hospitals, Senators Rick Scott and Jon Ossoff led a bipartisan group of colleagues in a letter to Veteran Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough launching an inquiry into the VA regarding delays for community care appointments, referral dates and scheduled medical appointment at VA locations nationwide. Senators Scott and Ossoff are joined by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Ted Budd (R-NC), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).

The senators write, “We receive frequent communications from our veteran constituents regarding lengthy wait times in both scheduling and receiving health care through community care providers. Eligible veterans have earned timely, quality health care; These delays must be urgently addressed.”

Senators Scott, Ossoff and their colleagues are urging the VA to fully implement U.S. Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) recommendations to improve program timeliness and efficiency. Since 2018, multiple GAO reports have recommended that VA ensure timely veteran medical care by establishing and analyzing feasible, discrete time standards. Of the six relevant GAO recommendations, VA has only fully implemented two.

Data from Iowa Should Terrify Trump Campaign

Entrance and exit poll data from the Iowa Caucuses revealed several notable statistics regarding support from Trump among younger voters and self-described Independent Voters. NBC’s entrance poll found that Trump failed to gain support from more than 21% of voters under the age of 29. Among voters under the age of 45, Trump’s numbers were stronger, but still under 50%, with 41% of the votes.

The Des Moines Register pre-caucus poll also found that among these gung-ho Republicans, six percent would support Robert F. Kennedy Jr. rather than Trump, and eight percent would seek another third party choice. Bottom line: At least 25 percent of Iowa Republican caucus-goers say they will not vote for Trump in the general.”

“That’s significant. Our elections are decided by a few thousand votes in five swing states,” said Mona Charen of The Bulwark. “Admittedly, Iowa is not one of those swing states, but if large numbers of Republicans in ruby-red Iowa are saying they will not vote for Trump in the general election, what does that suggest about Republicans in places like Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia?”

Trump’s campaign can’t ignore the damning data from these polls, as well as the fact that baby boomers have been replaced by younger generations as the largest voting group in America.

Steve Dixon Challenges Buddy Dyer on Crime, Economy in Orlando Mayoral Race

0

With less than a week remaining until Orlando residents head to the polls for the 2023 Mayoral Election, candidate Steve Dixon is pitching a plan to reduce crime and improve economic conditions throughout the city. In a recent video, Dixon cited Orlando’s crime stats in the state for violent crime, and vowed to improve law enforcement to ensure a better quality of life for locals.

“For many years Central Florida has been the third highest in the nation for human trafficking calls,” Dixon said. “Florida ranks third in the US for violent crimes, and Orlando is 2.2 two times the Florida state average. That means Orlando is the number one large city in Florida for violent crime and one of the highest in the nation.. I will command our law enforcement to aggressively enforce the law. I will get drugs off the street, and dealers in jail. I will aggressively pursue and prosecute human and sex traffickers and bring them to justice our children must be protected. I may not be able to control the southern border, but I will get control of our streets.”

Dixon faces an uphill challenge against Dyer, who has been in office as mayor since 2003. Dixon has vowed to reduce city taxes and utility costs, which have risen during Dyer’s tenure. Dixon also pledges to broaden the city’s economic focus beyond tourism. Dixon is labeling himself the “MOGA Candidate”, to “Make Orlando Great Again”, a parody of Donald Trump’s 2016 motto: “Make America Great Again.”

“A high priority of my administration would be to shrink our city gov’t and its bloated budget which has mushroomed since Dyer came into office. In the 90’s, we used to talk about the high tech corridor from Tampa to Jacksonville. Whatever happened to that? Orlando broke that by focusing only on tourism for decades. I think it’s time to revive that idea and to make Orlando the epicenter of a new, improved high-tech corridor. I will create an environment for growth and opportunity that will raise the standard of living and quality of life for everyone in our community.”

Tennessee Senator Accuses Biden of Holding Israel Aid Hostage

With the conflict in Israel dominating international headlines and tensions heightened across the globe, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) criticized President Joe Biden, accusing the Commander in Chief of effectively holding funds for Israel hostage by tying them to funding support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia.

In an official statement released Thursday, Blackburn describved Biden’s dilluted support in the Israel support package as “irresponsible.”

“Biden is sending a $100 billion emergency funding request to Congress, but only $10 billion of that is allocated for Israel,” Blackburn said. “There is an immediate responsibility on Congress to make sure Israel has what it needs to defend itself, and to hold that aid hostage by linking it with a myriad of other issues – including bailout for sanctuary cities and more money for Ukraine – is irresponsible. These separate funding requests should be considered as such.”

North Carolina Reaches Milestone for Autistic Professionals

Below is a press release from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper regarding North Carolina’s employment program for early career autistic professionals, LiNC-IT.

LiNC-IT works with 44 employers to help employees on the autism spectrum succeed at work, recognized as national model

RALEIGH -North Carolina’s employment program for early career autistic professionals, LiNC-IT, has achieved an important milestone, Governor Roy Cooper announced. Since the Governor launched the program in 2018, LiNC-IT has supported 100 individuals with autism spectrum disorder, enabling them to be successful in careers that match their interests and abilities.

“Employers need talented, dedicated workers and people on the autism spectrum can often fill the bill,” Governor Cooper said. “LiNC-IT taps into this potential by matching neurodiverse individuals with careers where they can contribute and succeed.”

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that begins early in childhood and consists of a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. A 2020 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the percentage of 8-year-olds that have been identified as having autism in North Carolina—1 in 39, or 2.5 percent—exceeds the national average of 1.85 percent. Compared to other areas in the U.S. that were monitored for ASD prevalence, North Carolina had the highest proportion of children with ASD who had received a comprehensive evaluation performed by age 3. However, only 23% of autistic adults with average or above-average intellectual abilities have a paid job in the community.

In 2018, Governor Cooper and the North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) launched LiNC-IT. LiNC-IT provides job coaching for individuals with ASD and their managers, and helps employers find and support new talent. Job coaching support is funded through NC Vocational Rehabilitation and provided by employment specialists at the UNC TEACCH Autism Center and the Autism Society of North Carolina. The program has 44 employer partners that have hired LiNC-IT talent with a variety of degrees including engineering, computer science, English, data science, accounting, and library science. LiNC-IT supports Governor Cooper’s Executive Order 92: Employment First for North Carolinians with Disabilities, which recently marked its four-year anniversary.

LiNC-IT has been recognized as a model program. Harvard’s Project on Workforce Development completed an evaluation of the program and wrote, “LiNC-IT offers its employer partners the opportunity to engage with a new untapped pool of highly skilled talent at a time where new talent pipelines are sorely needed. Creating neurodiverse talent initiatives not only brings enormous positive impact to neurodivergent individuals, but to society at large, while having a positive effect on organizational performance.”

Employers interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to contact NCBCE at ncbceadmin@nc.gov. Individuals interested in participating in the program should apply through the LiNC-IT website. You can hear from LiNC-IT employers and participants in this video.

Here what partners and employers have to say about LiNC-IT:

I was impressed with the abundance of resources available and the collaborative support provided by multiple agencies. The value this program brings to both employers as well as autistic individuals is impressive. I encourage all employers to think outside the box and explore non-traditional avenues for talent. This is truly an untapped candidate pool available to you!

LiNC-IT Employer Partner Jennifer Moulton, Talent Acquisition Leader, SoftwareOne

Employment is one of the greatest issues autistic adults face so the partnership between the Autism Society of North Carolina, TEACCH and LiNC-IT is so important to address this critical need.

Tracey Sheriff, CEO, Autism Society of North Carolina

The collaboration between TEACCH, the Autism Society of North Carolina, and LiNC-IT has been a wonderful success. It has empowered autistic individuals and companies to succeed together.

Laura Grofer Klinger, Ph.D. Executive Director, UNC TEACCH Autism Program

The mission of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) is to help North Carolinians with disabilities achieve their unique goals for employment. Meaningful partnerships with employers and disability service providers, like those that support LiNC-IT, enable our neurodiverse clients to overcome traditional barriers to success on the job. In celebration of the milestone achievement of supporting more than 100 internships, DVRS recommits itself to continued support of the program and to applying lessons learned from LiNC-IT to increasing opportunities for competitive integrated employment for all disability communities”.

North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd Co-Signs Letter Demanding Accountability on Pentagon Official’s Link to Iran

Washington, D.C. — Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) has co-signed a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin demanding a full explanation and accountability regarding a senior Pentagon official who has close links to the Iranian government.

Ariane Tabatabai, the chief of staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, was reportedly engaged in an Iranian government-linked initiative to bolster the Iranian government’s image and reinforce Tehran’s national security views. Leaked emails show Tabatabai asking the Iranian government for input on her speaking engagements and offering to consult with the Iranian government on a congressional briefing that she was invited to give.

In the letter, the senators called for the immediate suspension of Ms. Tabatabai’s security clearance.

The letter was led by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) and signed by a total of 30 senators.

Read the full letter here:

We are concerned that an individual who allegedly served as part of an Iranian Foreign Ministry information operation is currently serving in a senior Department of Defense position. We urge you to take immediate action to ensure that the Department has not been compromised.

On Tuesday, September 26, Semafor reported that Ariane Tabatabai, who currently serves as chief of staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict (SOLIC), was part of a so-called Iran Experts Initiative that “senior Iranian Foreign Ministry officials initiated [in] a quiet effort to bolster Tehran’s image and positions on global security issues – particularly its nuclear program.”

According to communications that Semafor reviewed, Ms. Tabatabai agreed to join the Iranian government-linked Initiative in early 2014, after meeting a Germany-based Iranian diplomat in Prague. On at least two occasions, Ms. Tabatabai “checked in with Iran’s Foreign Ministry before attending policy events.” The report details one occasion in which an Iranian think tank chief, who acted as an apparent liaison to the Iranian Foreign Minister, dissuaded Ms. Tabatabai from participating in a conference in Israel when she asked for his feedback. The report also indicates that Ms. Tabatabai potentially sought the Iranian government’s input on a congressional briefing that she was invited to give in July 2014.

Concerns about Ms. Tabatabai are not new. In March 2021, shortly after Ms. Tabatabai was appointed senior adviser in the Office of the Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Iranian dissidents noted Ms. Tabatabai’s long history of echoing the Iranian regime’s talking points. In April 2021, several House members requested a review of Ms. Tabatabai’s security clearance. In response, the Biden administration dismissed these allegations as “smears and slander.”

The latest allegations reported in Semafor, however, indicate that Ms. Tabatabai may have been engaged in a relationship with the Iranian regime well beyond what even her strongest critics alleged. The fact that the Department initially responded to these latest allegations by rushing a full-throated defense of Ms. Tabatabai, rather than taking the time to ensure that our national security has not been compromised, suggests that you are protecting hiring missteps rather than prioritizing national security.

Iran continues to threaten U.S. military personnel in the Middle East and remains intent on assassinating American citizens here in the United States. Given these facts, we find it simply unconscionable that a senior Department official would continue to hold a sensitive position despite her alleged participation in an Iranian government information operation. While we note that Assistant Secretary of Defense for SOLIC Christopher Maier, who is Ms. Tabatabai’s current supervisor, testified before the House on Thursday that the Department is “actively looking into whether all law and policy was properly followed in granting my chief of staff top secret special compartmented information,” we urge you to suspend Ms. Tabatabai’s security clearance immediately pending further review, as the State Department did with her former supervisor, Robert Malley.

In addition, we ask that you provide answers to the following questions no later than October 6:

  1. On what date did the Department of Defense learn that Ms. Tabatabai had served as part of the Iranian government-linked Iran Experts Initiative?
  2. On what date was Ms. Tabatabai granted a security clearance, and what was the sponsoring agency that made the determination to grant Ms. Tabatabai a security clearance?
  3. Has Ms. Tabatabai’s security clearance been subjected to a periodic reinvestigation and, if so, on what date was Ms. Tabatabai’s most recent periodic reinvestigation completed?
  4. Was Ms. Tabatabai subjected to any additional counterintelligence screening, to include a polygraph investigation, as part of her security clearance investigation or any subsequent review of her eligibility to hold a security clearance or access restricted or special access information?
  5. On her Standard Form-86, did Ms. Tabatabai list her contacts with:

a. Former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif;

b. Academic Adnan Tabatabai;

c. Mostafa Zahrani, the head of the Iran think tank IPIS; and/or

d. Former Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh?

  1. Was Ms. Tabatabai read into any special access programs (SAPs)?

a. If so, was she subjected to enhanced security vetting, per SAP security policy, or was she granted a waiver?

b. If she was granted a waiver to be read into SAPs, which DoD official approved the waiver?

Thank you in advance for your attention to this urgent matter.
