House Approves Posey’s Domestic Heparin Production Initiative

Below is a press release from Florida Congressman Bill Posey.

Congressman Bill Posey’s (R-Rockledge) initiative to reduce American dependence on Chinese production of heparin was adopted into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which passed the House last night with Posey’s support. Posey’s initiative will allow for an American-made source of heparin, encourage private capital to drive domestic development of this essential lifesaving drug, and take serious steps to end America’s heparin shortage.

“Like many lifesaving medications, heparin is predominantly manufactured by China and has been subject to contamination issues and supply chain shortages,” said Congressman Posey. “Restoring American production of this essential medicine is important to the lives of Americans and our nation’s security. It’s unlikely to make the headlines, but this is a big step in reducing our dependence on China for essential lifesaving medicines.”

Heparin, which is currently sourced from pigs, is used daily by millions of Americans in dialysis, preventing blood clots, for surgeries and other medical procedures. In addition to controlling the production, China also subsequently bought up the U.S. pig supply and now controls almost 60 percent of the world’s pigs, which has had dangerous repercussions for American patients.

Earlier this century, Chinese-based companies pumped counterfeit blood-thinners into our domestic markets to make a quick buck, but tragically 81 Americans died, and many more Americans were injured. When U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials testified before Congress on the 2008 contamination crisis, they insisted that “we must also remember that this is an essential drug, and we can’t simply stop the heparin supply.” The Posey heparin provision is a commonsense initiative that will protect patients and secure a safe and abundant domestic supply of this essential medicine for our service members, seniors, and patients.

The NDAA includes dozens of provisions that Congressman Posey fought for that aim to ensure that our military leadership focuses less on misguided social policies and more on equipping, training, and supporting our troops.

Tennessee Sen. Hagerty Accuses Biden Administration of Censoring Americans, Colluding with Big Tech

0

A Senator from Tennessee is accusing President Joe Biden’s administration of colluding with leading tech companies to censor online speech of American residents.

Yesterday, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R) held a press conference where he appealed to Democrats to discontinue their efforts to block passage of his legislation titled the “Disclose Government Censorship Act.”

First Amendment rights were the primary focus of Hagerty’s speech. Hagerty said that First Amendment rights have been “trampled upon” by the federal government. He also asserted that there has been collusion between the Administration and Big Tech to censor American speech, and called upon Democrats to reconsider their perspective on his Disclose Government Censorship Act. Hagerty also cited the case of Missouri vs. Biden, which was filed by current U.S. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo), when Schmitt was serving as Attorney General of Missouri.

“Ee had the opportunity to see the extent and the detail to which this Administration had gone to work with Big Tech to silence any opinion that differed from their preferred point of view, Hagerty said. “A Louisiana federal district judge heard this case. He determined that the actions of the White House violated our First Amendment rights, violated our constitutional rights to free speech. Let me share with you what that federal judge said about this case: ‘It arguably involves the most massive attack on free speech in United States history.’ That is stunning. Yet, the Biden Administration wants to perpetuate this. They want to continue to censor us.”

Hagerty vowed to bring his bill back to the U.S. Senate floor, and said he hopes the new facts will prompt more Democrats into joining Republicans to pass the bill.

Nikki Haley is in Denial About Her 2024 Election Odds – Opinion

With no poll showing Nikki Haley breaking into double digits in the Republican Primary over the past five months, the former U.N. Ambassador isn’t doing anyone a favor with her presidential campaign, with the exception of former President Donald Trump.

Haley failed to gain much traction during her initial launch as the first major candidate to officially declare after Trump’s announcement. Despite the national spotlight Haley enjoyed in February with no other Trump primary challengers competing for attention, her campaign couldn’t convert the exposure to expand their base of support. Other than her announcement speech and a gaffe that made her sound as if she was supporting Russia against Ukraine, Haley hasn’t given the press any reason to pay much attention to her campaign. Despite multiple opportunities to differentiate herself from Trump in the immediate aftermath of indictments against the former president, Haley has been reluctant to vocalize any criticism of his past or current legal issues.

Earlier this week, the New York Times published an interview with Haley which made her sound like she was in denial about her current standing among Republicans polled since her announcement.

“I look at it like one goal after another; I don’t look at the end,” Haley said in the interview from New Hampshire, where she holds 4.3 percent of the vote. “I know that by midfall, this is going to be totally different. Once you pass Labor Day, the numbers start to shift. And you can look at history for that. That’s not me just hoping, that’s me knowing.”

To date, no major new outlet poll has Haley hitting double-digit percent of support against Trump, but the percentage she does draw could possibly shift to other Trump challengers, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the only GOP candidate to consistently poll in double digits. Since Haley has been unwilling to condemn Trump’s actions or policies, Haley’s mere presence in the primary siphons support from any and all fellow challengers to Trump. There is no logical explanation for Haley’s refusal to criticize Trump, or her criticism of Ron DeSantis, labeling him as a Mini Trump without the charm.

Haley’s appeasement of Trump has been obvious since she launched her campaign in February, when she refrained from making any mention of Trump during her campaign launch speech. The closest Haley came to criticizing her former boss was when she stressed the need for younger leadership and expressed the need for closer scrutiny of elderly candidates, but even in that statement, she couldn’t bring herself to utter his name.

“We’ll have term limits for Congress, and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75-years old,” Haley said. She has yet to directly criticized any policy decisions made by the former President, despite the fact she was the first high profile Republican to enter the primary after Trump declared his 2024 candidacy.

North Carolina Governor Vetoes Bans on Gender Transition for Minors and Biological Males on Female Sports Teams

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) vetoed three bills from state legislators. After vetoing the legislation, Cooper, who is approaching his final year in as Governor, proceeded to accuse North Carolina Republicans of “inflaming their political culture wars, in defense of his decision.

“For campaign purposes only, Republicans are serving up a triple threat of political culture wars using government to invade the rights and responsibilities of parents and doctors, hurting vulnerable children and damaging our state’s reputation and economy like they did with the harmful bathroom bill,” Cooper said in an official statement. “Instead of scheming for the next election, Republicans should get to work investing in our public schools and teachers, lowering the cost of living and creating more stability for middle class families.”

On North Carolina House Bill 574, the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act”, would have banned minors who are biological males from joining women’s sports teams. Other states have considered or passed similar legislation after biological male Leah Thomas switched to his university’s female swim team and defeated biological females in the final rounds.

“We don’t need politicians inflaming their political culture wars by making broad, uninformed decisions about an extremely small number of vulnerable children that are already handled by a robust system that relies on parents, schools and sports organizations,” Cooper said. “Republican governors in other states have vetoed similar bills because they hurt their states’ reputation and economy and because they are neither fair nor needed.”

Regarding North Carolina House Bill 808, which would ban gender transition surgery for minors, Gov. Cooper condemned the bill as a danger for vulnerable youth and their mental health.

“A doctor’s office is no place for politicians, and North Carolina should continue to let parents and medical professionals make decisions about the best way to offer gender care for their children,” Cooper said. “Ordering doctors to stop following approved medical protocols sets a troubling precedent and is dangerous for vulnerable youth and their mental health. The government should not make itself both the parent and the doctor.”

Cooper’s assertion that blocking gender transition surgery is dangerous for vulnerable youth lacks consensus. National pediatric and psychological organizations in the United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, and Sweden are reconsidering the use of hormones and surgeries and calling for rigorous systematic review of available evidence regarding the safety, efficacy, and risks of childhood social transition, puberty blockers, cross sex hormones and surgery. Sweden and Finland ended their use of puberty blockers and reversed their endorsement of gender transition treatments for children, including hormone replacement therapy. They cited concerns about the inherent risks and dangers posed to the patients, including reproductive risks and other critical issues such as bone density.

Earlier this year, Vanderbilt University Medical Center paused its practice of gender affirming therapies based on “new recommendations” from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

On Senate Bill 49, titled the “Parent’s Bill of Rights”, Cooper quoted a misnomer to describe an education bill which was modeled after a bill in Florida that was mischaracterized by Democratic opponents and former Disney CEO Bob Chapek as the ‘Don’t say gay bill.” Major news outlets and Democrats across the country continue to use the phrase, which was coined by Florida’s self-touted most liberal state representative, Anna Eskamani. Neither North Carolina’s bill nor Florida’s bill mention or ban use of the word gay or homosexuality by students or teachers. The bills instruct kindergarten through third-grade teachers to refrain from any formal teaching lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite those facts, Cooper recycled the “Don’t say Gay Bill” quote when made the following statement on his veto of SB 49:

“Parents are the most essential educators for their children and their involvement must be encouraged, but this bill will scare teachers into silence by injecting fear and uncertainty into classrooms, Cooper said. “This “Don’t Say Gay” bill also hampers the important and sometimes lifesaving role of educators as trusted advisers when students have nowhere else to turn. The rights of parents are well established in state law, so instead of burdening schools with their political culture wars, legislators should help them with better teacher pay and more investments in students.”

Arkansas Senator Asks Secret Service to Release Information About Cocaine Found in the White House

Following a press conference where the White House official spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that cocaine was discovered in the West Wing, Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark) sent a letter to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, requesting that she release information about reports of a Secret Service officer finding cocaine in the West Wing of the White House. Cotton serves on the Subcommittee of Homeland Security and the Subcommittee of Defense, among others.

The text of Sen. Cotton’s official letter to Cheatle is below.

Dear Director Cheatle,

I write regarding the Secret Service’s recent discovery of white powder, reportedly confirmed to be cocaine, inside the White House. According to public reports, the Secret Service has not yet confirmed where in the West Wing the cocaine was found. I urge you to release that information quickly, as the American people deserve to know whether illicit drugs were found in an area where confidential information is exchanged.

If the White House complex is not secure, Congress needs to know the details, as well as your plan to correct any security flaws. Please answer the following questions as soon as practicable, but in any event no later than 5:00PM on Friday, July 14. Further, please contact my staff to arrange a briefing on this matter, as well as the provision of any answers that are classified or law enforcement sensitive.

  1. Who has access to the White House complex without passing through any security screening? Please provide a complete list of all such individuals.
  2.  Who has access to the White House complex while subject to lesser security screening requirements than the most complete screening required of individuals accessing the West Wing? Please provide a complete list of all such individuals, along with a description of the lesser screening requirements and the reasons such individuals are not subject to complete screening.
  3. The Secret Service’s Annual Report for FY2022 notes that the Secret Service’s Personnel Screening K-9 program screens approximately 10 million “visitors to the exterior of The White House each year.” How many visitors to the interior of the White House are screened by the Secret Service’s K-9s each year? Please provide a description of the circumstances under which the Secret Service chooses not to use K-9 screening for West Wing visitors.
  4. In the past five years, how often has the Secret Service encountered illegal drugs at the White House complex? How often were these drugs detected during security screenings, and how often were these drugs encountered inside secure areas?
  5. Section 3056A of Title 18, U.S. Code, provides members of the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division with the authority to “make arrests without warrant for any offense against the United States committed in their presence, or for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States if they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such felony.” Illegally possessing cocaine is a crime under federal law. If the Secret Service discovers the identity of the individual who brought illicit cocaine into the White House complex, will they make an arrest under this provision?
  6. How often does the Secret Service audit its security procedures for the White House complex and adjust those procedures to correct potential flaws? Please provide details regarding the most recent complete audit, including whether it was conducted by the Secret Service or another entity.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.

Florida Democratic Party Leader Slams New Law Requiring Legal Immigrant Status for Workers

0

The chairwoman of Florida’s Democratic Party is criticizing a new state law that requires workers in Florida to be legal residents or legal immigrants. Nikki Fried, who is in her first year as the Democrats’ state chair, said the state’s new law, which was originally drafted as state senate bill 1718, is leading to staffing shortages, and causing food prices to increase, without citing any hard evidence, and despite the fact that the bill hadn’t been in effect for more than a few days when she made the claim.

The law requires that private employers with more than 25 employees use the federal government’s E-Verify system for newly hired employees. Fried described the bill as “anti-immigrant”, and “anti-worker”, despite the fact that no legal immigrants and no legal workers are at risk of violating the new law.

“Over the past month, we’ve seen empty construction sites, fields without farmers, and restaurants short staffed,” Fried said. This anti-immigrant law is a disaster for our economy with a direct impact on our largest industries from agriculture, tourism and construction, but also it will have a direct impact on our cost of living. With fewer workers, the cost of food will increase, construction of homes will be delayed, and costs will rise. We already have a housing shortage, and now we won’t have enough people to build more affordable homes.”

During a guest appearance on MSNBC, Fried said that Florida Democrats attempted to fight the new law during this year’s legislative session, and she described the session as the most “most anti-worker, anti-female, anti, basically every community that is marginalized, anti -freedom and anti-democracy.”

Florida Democrats chose to make Nikki Fried their new leader. The Democrats’ selection of Fried for for state chair came after she lost to Charlie Crist in the gubernatorial primary but 25 points and more than 368,000 votes, despite Crist’s own streak of losses in statewide races in general elections. Prior to her selection as party chair Fried’s most notable accomplishment in government was in 2018, when she edged-out state representative Matt Caldwell (R) by less than one percent in the for Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer. Fried’s lopsided loss to Crist was followed by incumbent Gov. Ron DeSantis defeating Crist by one of the largest margin in Florida’s history.

Fried has remarkable challenges ahead, including voter registration deficits. In 2018, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by nearly 300,000. Today, Florida Republicans outnumber registered Democrats by 400,000.

North Carolina Governor Wants to Separate Medicaid Expansion from the State Budget

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and North Carolina legislators are in a negotiation scenario that mirrors many bipartisan negotiations at the national level surrounding health care. Earlier today, Cooper asked legislators to separate recently-agreed upon Medicaid Expansion from the state’s overall budget.

In an official statement released earlier today, Cooper returned to a partisan tone, and accused Republican state legislators of “ripping health care away from thousands of real people.”

“Making Medicaid Expansion contingent on passing the budget was and is unnecessary, and now the failure of Republican legislators to pass the budget is ripping health care away from thousands of real people and costing our state and our hospitals millions of dollars. Tying it to the budget is tying our hands, and the legislature should decouple the two and start Medicaid Expansion now.”

According to Cooper, a bill authorizing Medicaid Expansion into law March 27, 2023 had a provision he opposed, which authorized in House Bill 76 delayed its start date to adoption of the state budget. As a result, approximately 9,000 residents will lose Medicaid Coverage that they would be able to keep via expansion.

North Carolina’s expansion of legislation has been idle as state lawmakers continue budget negotiations. Once there is a signed 2023-24 state budget, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services will submit a State Plan amendment to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

North Carolina’s Department of Health said that after a budget is enacted, it will determine a proposed go live date.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin Might Run for President in 2024

As political pundits continue to ponder whether or not President Joe Biden will face additional competitors in the 2024 Democratic Party Presidential Primary, another Joe is getting national attention due to recent news regarding a political organization known as “No Labels.”

Manchin gained national attention when he defied his party to oppose Biden’s “Build back better act”, as well as Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Labor and Biden’s clean energy environmental plan, citing the potential devastating impact it could have on West Virginia’s coal mining industry. Ultimately, in exchange for his support of the clean energy plan, Manchin was able persuade Biden to secure the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Throughout the past year, his name has been floated as a potential party-switcher or a third party candidate for either the U.S. Senate or the Presidency.

With the help of NoLabels.org, a self-described non-partisan organization devoted to centrism and bipartisanship, Manchin has continued to raise his national profile as a frequent guest on talk shows such as NBC’s Meet the Press and other national news outlets. According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Manchin has been a repeat guest on No Labels’ weekly calls with its donors. No Labels says it was emboldened by a December survey it commissioned showing that 59% of voters would be open to supporting a moderate independent candidate.

If Manchin opts to run for re-election to his senate seat, he would likely face current West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, in the general election. During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Manchin vowed to wait until the end of 2023 to make a decision on whether or not he will run of the presidency.
