Mike Rogers, born on July 16, 1958, in Hammond, Indiana, is a Republican politician who has been serving as the U.S. Representative for Alabama’s 3rd congressional district since 2003. He is recognized as a conservative Christian and is the father of three children. Furthermore, he has been married to his wife, Beth, for over 40 years.
Rogers was raised in Calhoun County, Alabama, specifically in the small mill village of Blue Mountain. His mother was employed at a local textile mill, while his father worked as a firefighter. These experiences imparted upon him the fundamental values of family, diligence, and sacrifice.
Throughout his time in Congress, Rogers has sponsored and supported legislation that reflects his conservative beliefs. He co-sponsored the Sanctity of Human Life Act, which underscores his anti-abortion stance. In 2018, he received a 100% rating from National Right to Life and a 0% rating from NARAL for his voting record on abortion-related issues.
Rogers opposes the ban on federal health coverage that includes abortion and is against the use of human embryos for stem cell research. He has voted in favor of efforts to restrict the interstate transport of minors seeking abortions and supports allowing partial-birth abortion only when the mother’s life is at risk. Additionally, he is opposed to human cloning and signed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.
In the realm of foreign affairs, Rogers has actively expressed his views on U.S. involvement in international organizations. Following Brexit in June 2016, he advocated for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations by introducing the American Sovereignty Act of 2017. He later submitted a similar bill, H.R. 204 – the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2019, which aimed to terminate U.S. membership in the U.N.
Rogers has encountered several controversies, particularly regarding civil rights and social issues. In 2013, he cast a vote against the Violence Against Women Act and opposed the expansion of federal hate crime legislation to include protections for LGBTQ individuals. Furthermore, he voted against the establishment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in June 2021.
Rogers is actively involved in economic policy and has demonstrated this by signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which is an initiative by Americans for Tax Reform aimed at limiting tax increases. He also supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, a significant piece of legislation that aimed to reduce tax rates for individuals and corporations, stimulate economic growth, and provide financial relief to American families.
Furthermore, during the 2023 United States debt ceiling crisis—which involved critical negotiations to prevent the country from defaulting on its financial obligations—Rogers voted in favor of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. This act was intended to establish more stringent fiscal management practices and ensure long-term financial stability for the nation. His support for these measures reflects his commitment to promoting fiscal responsibility and economic growth.
Rogers’s political positions have given him an 86% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union as of 2020, reflecting a strong adherence to conservative principles.
