Georgia Congressman Mike Collins Statement on Arrest of President Trump in Fulton County

Below is a press release from Georgia Congressman Mike Collins.

Washington, D.C.—Representative Mike Collins (R-Ga.) released the following statement regarding the news of former President Donald J. Trump’s arrest in Fulton County, Georgia:”Americans deserve a legal system built on the rule of law, not lawfare. The arrest of President Trump and his legal team by left-wing activist Fani Willis is a disgrace to our great country and a blatant attempt to influence the 2024 presidential election,” said Rep. Collins. “Georgia’s new Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission must act to remove Willis when our new state law to hold rogue district attorneys accountable takes effect. Until then, rest assured, I will keep fighting to impeach Joe Biden, Merrick Garland, and Christopher Wray for their political weaponization of the federal justice system and cut as much funding from the corrupt DOJ as possible.”

Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman Discusses Biden Administration’s China Strategy, Secretary Raimondo’s China Trip

Below is a press release from Virginia Congressman Robb Wittman.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) joined ‘Mornings with Maria’ on Fox Business today to discuss U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s upcoming trip to China, the latest failure of the Biden administration to project American strength to Chinese Communist Party officials.

“Based on previous visits by Secretary Blinken and Secretary Yellen, I’m not sure what’s going to be accomplished because none of these visits, including Secretary Raimondo’s, have set preconditions. For this meeting, if she wants to talk about business interests, there should be a precondition that China will stop intellectual property theft, they will honor … our businesses and how they operate in China. “If you don’t [set those preconditions] then you are essentially going to be subservient to China — and that’s exactly what they want. This is an opportunity for [the Chinese Communist Party] to show that they’re in a position of power [and make it appear as if] the U.S. in a position of weakness. “That’s not the way to do diplomacy. And you don’t go there saying we’d like all these glowing outcomes to be there. Instead, [we should say that these are the] preconditions under which we’re going to meet, and we expect that China’s going to commit to not stealing intellectual property.“It doesn’t seem like anything substantive comes out of these meetings. These are all for appearance, and I would argue it’s to China’s advantage for the appearance to be that our U.S. officials are going to China at the bequest of China. That’s not the way to have the upper hand in these discussions or even to be on a level playing field in these discussions. No preconditions set, it seems like [the Biden administration is] doing everything [they] can to try to appease China instead of standing up to China.”

Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar Questions Dept. of Energy Over Regulations on Ceiling Fan Manufacturers

Below is a press release from Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar.

Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) joined her colleagues on the House Small Business Committee in questioning Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm’s new proposed regulatory standards on ceiling fan manufacturers in Miami.

“Small businesses in Miami are hurting from the Biden Administration’s cruel and unruly regulatory agenda,” said Rep. Salazar. “Biden’s Department of Energy is proposing rules that would put thousands of ceiling fan manufacturers across my District and the country out of business. Make no mistake – Biden’s energy agenda is anti-Miami and anti-America.”

The Department of Energy submitted a proposed rule for comment in June 2023 concerning new energy conservation standards on ceiling fan manufacturers.

This proposed rule would decrease the maximum estimated energy consumption permissible for large diameter and belt driven ceiling fans. This rule would require numerous small business fan manufacturers to redesign their products and may put between 10 and 30 percent of small business ceiling fan manufacturers out of business.

This bureaucratic rule will cost and impose severe hardship on Miami small business owners who are already seeing their livelihoods driven down by inflation, supply chain issues, and burdensome regulation.

Representative Salazar represents tens of thousands of small businesses in Florida’s 27th District, the majority of which employ between one and four people.

Kentucky Congressman Morgan McGarvey Asks U.S. Department Of Education to Provide Resources to Address Bus Driver Shortages in Kentucky

Below is a press release from Kentucky Congressman Morgan McGarvey.

LOUISVILLE, KY (August 22, 2023) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) sent a letter asking the U.S. Department of Education to provide any available grants, funding, or other resources to address bus driver shortages following the bus delays that impacted JCPS earlier this month.

“Every parent deserves to send their kids to school with peace of mind that they’re being taken care of and will come home safely,” said Rep. McGarvey. “The extreme bus delays at the start of this school year meant many young students, including our own, didn’t get home from school until late in the evening — and some kids didn’t get picked up at all. This isn’t normally a federal issue, but I’m asking the Department of Education to provide our community with additional resources to help alleviate the shortage of bus drivers and provide extra relief for the drivers who are working hard to take our kids to and from school. While Congress doesn’t — and shouldn’t — control Jefferson County bus routes, I’m exploring every possible solution to make sure this never happens again.”

The full text of the letter is below:

Dear Deputy Assistant Secretary Schott:

Public schools are the core of our communities. As a tenet we all hold dear, public education is the foundation upon which we ensure that each successive generation is equipped to flourish and thrive with dignity. A strong education system forges strong minds which forge a strong country. When our schools succeed, we all succeed.

One of the pillars of the American education system is the idea that all students, regardless of race, gender, disability, socioeconomic status, or any other characteristic, are entitled to a free and comprehensive education that promotes their growth, intellect, and personhood. Part of that mission is transportation to and from school to ensure that all students have ready access to success. As a proud product of Jefferson County Public Schools (“JCPS”) and fierce supporter of public education, I understand how critical it is to uphold this bedrock commitment.

I applaud all those who serve our public schools and help to enlighten the minds of the next generation. It is up to all of us to ensure that those public servants have the tools, resources, and support they need to carry this mission through. As you know, a shortage of bus drivers and fiscal constraints have plagued schools across the country. Jefferson County Public Schools has lost a third of its bus drivers since before the COVID-19 pandemic.  This bus driver shortage, in addition to other salient factors, led to a bus fiasco on the first day of school at JCPS with long delays and logistical potholes.

Like many JCPS parents, I sent my son on a bus for his first day at a new school, and he didn’t get home until after dinner. Some kids weren’t picked up at all or didn’t get home until nearly ten o’clock at night, leading to worried parents and hungry kids.  Every parent deserves to send their kids to school with peace of mind that they’re being taken care of and will come home safely. Let me be clear: our school bus drivers and our JCPS faculty and staff went above and beyond in ensuring that these kids got home safely despite the challenges that arose. Nevertheless, we cannot allow this to happen again.

As the dust settles and students begin to return to the classroom, I will continue to monitor ways we can best uplift and support our school system. In the meantime, I will continue to support efforts on Capitol Hill to ensure that our schools receive the robust federal supports they deserve and the resources they need. The bus driver shortage not only afflicts JCPS, but also school districts across the country.

Thus, I write to ask that the Department of Education identify and provide Jefferson County Public Schools with any existing grants, tools, or other resources the district can use to address the school bus driver shortage. As this shortage affects districts all over the country, I also write to ask what actions the Department is taking to address the shortage and support affected state and local education agencies.

I look forward to your timely response along with the other parents of JCPS. I appreciate all that you and your office do to uphold the dignity and development of our youth. Their success is our success.

Sincerely,

Morgan McGarvey

Member of Congress

Georgia Congressmen Sanford Bishop and Austin Scott Tell Postmaster General to Protect Mail Service to Protect Mail Service for Middle Georgia and Rural Communities

Below is a press release from Georgia Congressman Sanford Bishop.

MACON, Ga. – Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA-02) and Congressman Austin Scott (R-GA-08) sent a letter to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the U.S. Postal Service’s Board of Governors regarding the proposed changes to the Macon Processing and Distribution facility (Macon P&DC) in Macon, Georgia. The letter urges the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to keep the Macon P&DC open, and not scale it down, so that it can continue to process local mail and deliver both letters and packages to Middle Georgians on-time.

“The U.S. Postal Service should strive to provide the best possible service to every family and business in America, even those whose addresses are located in remote areas and rural communities,” said Congressman Bishop. “Any proposed changes to postal operations in Middle Georgia should take into account the unique challenges faced by rural Americans, especially our seniors who often rely on USPS for the delivery of bills, checks, and prescription drugs.”

“Rural Georgians deserve to get their mail and packages in a timely manner. I’m working with Rep. Bishop to ensure that rural Georgians are not left behind as USPS makes changes to their processing and distribution centers,” said Congressman Austin Scott.

The bipartisan letter also asks USPS to consider the potential loss of postal jobs and possible delivery delays of mail, so that the people of Georgia fully understand the consequences of any proposed changes.

In March of 2021, USPS published its “Delivering for America” plan to modernize the Postal Service and save costs. In July 2023, USPS announced a Mail Processing Facility Review (MPFR) of the Macon P&DC to determine if it would be possible to move some operations from the Macon facility to the new Atlanta Regional Processing and Distribution Center (RPDC).

As a result of the review, it has been proposed to change Macon’s P&DC into a Local Processing Center (LPC), which processes only letters and flat mail and is not expected to process packages originating from Middle Georgia.

Following the closings of the Columbus, Albany, and Valdosta Customer Service Mail Processing Centers (CSMPCs) in 2012, Middle and Southwest Georgia lost jobs and faced mail delivery delays as local mail is now processed through more distant facilities in metro Atlanta, Montgomery, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee.

Congressman Bishop and Congressman Scott are concerned that the loss or scaling down of the Macon P&DC could make the situation worse and harm rural communities that rely on the Post Office the most.

You can view a copy of the letter on Congressman Bishop’s website.

Fleischmann Leads Groundbreaking of New Disposal Cell at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

0

Below is a press release from Tennessee Congressman Chuck Fleischmann.

Chattanooga, TN – U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann (TN-03), Chairman of the Energy and Water Subcommittee of Appropriations and Co-Chairman of the bipartisan Nuclear Cleanup and National Labs Caucuses, led the groundbreaking of the new Environmental Management Disposal Facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Y-12 National Security Complex. The groundbreaking of the $550-million disposal cell is a major infrastructure project for the Oak Ridge community and ensures that environmental cleanup efforts in Oak Ridge will continue. Work on the new disposal cell is the cumulation of years of persistence and advocacy by Chairman Fleischmann with state, federal, and private partners.

“Since I first came to Congress, I’ve vowed to the Oak Ridge community that cleanup of contaminated sites dating back to the Manhattan Project and Cold War eras would continue. I’m proud that with the groundbreaking of the new disposal cell at ORNL and Y-12, I have kept my promise. Because of the work now being done to construct a new disposal cell, legacy cleanup will continue in Oak Ridge until it’s complete”, said Congressman Fleischmann. “That means that ORNL will be able to take down excess facilities. That means that our friends at NNSA will be able to do the critical work on our nuclear arsenal to keep our country safe.”

“In my role as Chairman of the Energy and Water Subcommittee of Appropriations and Co-Chair of the Nuclear Cleanup and National Lab Caucuses, I’ve long said that we have an obligation to communities nationwide to continue the important work of legacy nuclear cleanup. Too many communities, including Oak Ridge, are dealing with contaminated buildings, soil, and groundwater. The government has an obligation to clean up these sites and return them for localities to use.”

“The $550-million disposal cell project is a major investment into Oak Ridge’s and East Tennessee’s future. Not only is the facility a massive and important infrastructure project for our state that provides good-paying jobs, but the cleanup of previously contaminated sites will allow billions of dollars in new investment to flow into Oak Ridge. I want to thank the countless local and state leaders, private partners, and federal officials who worked with me to make this groundbreaking a reality.”

Florida Congressman Daniel Webster Joins Colleagues Requesting Answers on CCP-Linked Money Going to NIH Employees

Below is a press release from Florida Congressman Daniel Webster regarding the NIH and the Communist Party of China/

Washington, D.C. — Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, recently joined U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R-TX), and 13 House Republicans in requesting a response to a series of questions regarding National Institutes of Health (NIH) employees receiving payments from private companies that are affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The letter comes after Open The Books, a government transparency group, released a report that identified at least 34 different Chinese companies who made royalty payments to NIH scientists from 2008 to 2021. The report also found that at least 59 payments originated from the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, a CCP controlled subsidiary connected to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the organization that multiple federal agencies now believe initially leaked the COVID-19 virus.

“These payments raise not only national security concerns but deepen concerns regarding the potential undue influence massive healthcare companies may have over public health agencies engaged in developing and regulating products and responding to public health threats – like COVID-19,” the members wrote. “The American people deserve to know that their public health officials follow the science and make decisions based purely on objective information, not personal financial motives.”

Co-signers of the letter include Representatives Lance Gooden (R-TX), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Eli Crane (R-AZ), Mary Miller (R-IL), Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Ben Cline (R-VA), Roger Williams (R-TX), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Bob Good (R-VA), and Andrew Clyde (R-GA)
