Christopher Michael Carr, born February 8, 1972, in Lansing, Michigan, is a prominent figure in Georgia’s legal and political scene. He moved to Georgia in 1978 and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1995 and a Juris Doctor from the Lumpkin School of Law in 1999.
Carr began his professional career in the private sector at Georgia Pacific, followed by a role in law at Alston & Bird LLP in Atlanta. He then served as Vice President and General Counsel for the Georgia Public Policy Foundation. His public service career started as Chief of Staff for U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, a position he held for six years. During this time, Carr provided advice on federal legislation and judicial nominations, gaining experience in legislative processes.
In November 2013, Governor Nathan Deal appointed Carr as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). Under his leadership, Georgia was recognized as the top state for business for three consecutive years. The GDEcD facilitated 1,069 projects, generating approximately $14.4 billion in investment and over 84,000 jobs statewide.
Carr’s ascent continued when Governor Deal appointed him as Georgia’s Attorney General on November 1, 2016, succeeding Sam Olens. He was subsequently elected to a full four-year term in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. In November 2024, Carr announced his candidacy for the 2026 Georgia gubernatorial election, positioning himself as a conservative leader with a focus on job creation, public safety, and constitutional defense.
Approach to Lowering Crime
As Attorney General, Carr has prioritized combating gang violence, human trafficking, opioid abuse, elder abuse, and consumer fraud. He established the Statewide Opioid Task Force, now comprising over 400 members, to address the opioid crisis through collaborative efforts. In February 2025, Carr initiated Operation “Hold the Line,” a multi-agency effort targeting transnational gangs involved in human trafficking, organized retail crime, weapons smuggling, and fentanyl trafficking in Georgia. This operation underscores his commitment to dismantling criminal networks that endanger communities.
Mindset on Social Justice Issues
Carr’s approach to social justice is rooted in upholding the rule of law while addressing systemic issues. He has been proactive in protecting older adults from exploitation, creating the Georgia Consumer Protection Guide for Older Adults to educate and safeguard this vulnerable population.
His office has also been involved in prosecuting public corruption cases, including indictments against former public officials for racketeering, bribery, and financial fraud. These actions reflect his dedication to maintaining integrity within public institutions.
Record on Illegal Immigration
Carr has been vocal about the challenges posed by illegal immigration, particularly its association with increased crime rates and drug trafficking. In a December 2024 op-ed, he highlighted the activities of violent gangs like Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organization operating in multiple states, including Georgia. Carr emphasized the necessity of strong federal leadership to address these issues effectively.
He has taken legal action against federal policies he believes exacerbate these problems, including filing suits to stop the implementation of “catch and release” and to maintain measures like “Remain in Mexico” and Title 42. Carr’s office has also collaborated with law enforcement to seize substantial amounts of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid contributing to overdose deaths nationwide.
In response to specific incidents, such as the murder of Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant, Carr has supported legislative measures like the Laken Riley Act to enhance protections for Georgia families.
Throughout his career, Chris Carr has demonstrated a commitment to public service, focusing on economic development, public safety, and the enforcement of laws designed to protect Georgia’s citizens.
